The best museum in all of DC was well off the beaten path -- the Army Medical Museum up by Walter Reed. This museum was established around the Civil War era to collect Army medical history which, at the time, was a lot of case studies of cutting edge amputations they were doing on the battlefield. The museum is totally gross, but in every delightful way. Try finding something like this down by the Mall.
